Q: What's different about the websites you build and something like a Wordpress site?

A: Everything. For one, with AuthorLabs-built website once you load information about a book, the site will automatically feed it to related pages (such as book page and homepage, when you want to highlight a new release).
Updating any information on your site for things like Appearances or News is a breeze. If you decide to have a ‘store front’ included in your package, adding books to it will be just as easy; and the check-out is automated, so once you ship the book, you can send a confirmation email to the buyer with one click.

Q: What about security and getting hacked?

A: Good question! Authors are referred to us all the time because their websites were hacked. The most common way to hack a website is through weak spots and issues with the platform. Free open source programs (like Wordpress) let anyone see the code for your site with the click of a mouse, allowing vulnerabilities to be easily exploited. The same goes for plug-ins. That’s why a website platform needs to be updated and held secure. Updates are released frequently and at random times, so you constantly have to be on the lookout.

Q: A custom website sounds expensive.

Q: What if I am a graphic artist and want to design my own look for the site?

A: If you want to design your own page, you can certainly do that as long as you purchase the Custom Design plan. However, it will not decrease the price. We’re sure we don’t have to tell you how significant it is to work with designers, who understand our custom software. It would take more time to adapt a design from someone unfamiliar with this software. I would suggest that a client with graphic design background work one-on-one with our designer to bring their vision to life.

Q: Do I have to pay the money all at once?

A: We require a nonrefundable deposit to begin work on your site. The balance is due three days after the site is completed and handed to you for review, at which point you can begin loading your content. We’re here for whatever you need while you load content, and will be available as you test the site. We will launch when you say, “Go!”

Q: How long will it take to build my website?

A: Once we have received a signed agreement and your deposit for the initial startups, you will be sent a design questionnaire to help us figure out the direction for your website. After we receive the completed questionnaire, we’ll put you in the queue to be contacted by a designer. Depending on how many client sites we are currently working on, the designer will contact you anywhere from 3-5 days from receipt of your questionnaire. We can give you a better idea of the timeline once you are ready to move forward.

Q: Will I own my website once it's finished?

A: All visual design and graphics are yours. If you pay for a completely custom site, not built on our software, you will own that, but we recommend using our software platform for all the reasons stated on the Services page. If you do choose to use our software we own the “platform” for your website, as this is proprietary material. However, if at any time you decide to leave, you may certainly do so, and the “design and content” will still belong to you. You will just have to put it on another platform, which we can help with, if needed. But we intend to spoil you so much, you would miss us.

Q: Do you provide the domain?

A: No, you should always acquire your domain yourself. There are plenty of places such as godaddy.com for searching and buying domains. We’ll help you with how to do that, though.
